Tramadol was developed by Grünenthal GmbH, a German pharmaceutical company in Stolberg close to Aachen, in the late 1970s and holds the patent to Ultram® (Tramadol), and its more powerful derivative Nucynta® (Tapentadol), which are both used as painkillers with Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibition.
Originally Tramadol was developed to treat moderate to moderately severe pain and to be taken like codeine. Over time many other applications have been found for pain related alements such as but not limited to cancer related pain, restless leg syndrome, fibromyalgia.
